Gierkink: Woodbine horses to watch for week of Sept. 25
FLIGHT DECK
Trainer: Mike DePaulo
Last race: Sept. 24, 5th
Finish: 1st by head
Beyer: 62
He came on strongly from off slow fractions to gamely win his debut in a seven-furlong maiden special for 2-year-olds. The Ontario-bred by Lemon Drop Kid should be a contender in the Cup and Saucer Stakes, which his trainer has won before.
FRESH PRINCESS
Trainer: Tony Gattellaro
Last race: Sept. 23, 7th
Finish: 2nd by neck
Beyer: 74
She was up against it while racing four wide in a stalking position in a slow-paced sprint for non-winners-of-three Ontario-sired allowance types, but wasn’t far from finding the mark. She should clear that condition soon.
RARE GEM
Trainer: Mark Casse
Last race: Sept. 22, 9th
Finish: 2nd by 1
Beyer: 52
On a turf course that favored speed, she rallied wide from seven lengths back to finish a clear second against $20,000 maidens, and shouldn’t be held off much longer.
