Gierkink: How I'll play Woodbine on Sunday, May 7
I rarely play Woodbine’s pick five, a 20-cent-base bet with a 25 percent takeout, but it seems getable without spending a lot.
The sequence kicks off in the second race with a short-priced single, GREEN DOCTOR (6). The classy comebacker drew toward the outside in the $10,000 starter, a post from which she should be able to track the other speed before going in for the kill.
The third race, a weak group of $10,000 conditioned claimers, could be a fight to the finish between the front-runners DANCE WITH ME BABY (6) and HAVEAWONDERFULDAY (7).
AFLEET DOLL (7), who wintered in Florida, is probably the fittest filly among the $25,000 maidens in the fourth. The 3-year-old has been an underachiever, but she merits top billing over the 4-year-old comebackers MISS BAO TO U (8) and LYLA LORRAINE (9).
The fifth can be pared down to THIRTEEN DIAMONDS (1) and LADY ST CLEMENTS (5).
YES DARLIN (4) could double up off his maiden win as the main speed in the sixth, an optional claimer for 3-year-olds. SIGNATURE SPRING (1), with blinkers off, and CONQUEST LEMONRAID (6) should also be used. They’re all charting unknown territory over the seven-furlong distance, but one of them figures to excel over the trip.
PICK 5 (RACES 2-6): 6 / 6,7 / 7,8,9 / 1,5 / 1,4,6
