Gierkink: How I'll play Woodbine on Sunday, May 21
In race 1, LETTER FLY (3) finished a close fourth off a winter layoff April 21 in an ultra-key $25,000 claimer from which the first, second, third, and sixth horses all excited to excel. She’s back at the same level at 4-1 on the line, and I’ll play her to win at 3-1 or higher.
The pick five begins on race 2, and I’ll start by hitting the “all” button in the contentious $20,000 conditioned claimer.
Race 3 contains the fishy dropper ULTRAFLAME (2), a must-use, and front-runner RED FEVER (7), who could make all the running in the manner of his recent victory in a $10,000 starter.
BIG GILLETTE (4), a 4-year-old with eight shares in 14 outings, looks to have finally found a field that he can beat in the fourth. Alan Garcia can make the most of the gelding’s tactical speed in the six-furlong dash for $12,500 maidens, and I’ll key him in the sequence.
Race 5 can be pared down to the obvious protagonists, ROYAL KATY (1) and HOCKEY HAIR (3).
Race 6 includes two fillies who figure to adore the seven-furlong distance, CRUMLIN QUEEN (3) and SAM’S CROSS (5).
PICK 5 (Races 2-6): ALL / 2,7 / 4 / 1,3 / 3,5
