Gierkink: How I'll play Gulfstream for Saturday, Jan. 27
The early pick four on the fabulous Pegasus World Cup Card consists of three maiden special weight events and the Grade 3 La Prevoyante Stakes.
Spreading out in race 2 with a host of first-timers by high-percentage debut sires: Cache (Distorted Humor), Takechargedelilah (Take Charge Indy), Divided by Three (Shackleford), and East Moon (Speightstown). Muchacho Uno, who was a wide third behind a subsequent winner in her opener, is another win candidate in the seven-furlong sprint. With Lasix added, Romantic Moment is another second-timer worth using. Morning-line favorite Coach Rock is a toss because she’s grown accustomed to being a bridesmaid.
The $200,000 La Prevoyante could belong to 7-5 morning-line choice Apple Betty, a Galileo mare who adores the 12-furlong distance. Daring Duchess has a chance to lead all the way, and Texting is hard to ignore because of her connections, trainer Chad Brown and jockey Javier Castellano, who are a combined 5 for 10 at the meet.
In the fourth, a one-turn, one-mile route, I’ll single the promising Life’s a Parlay, who’s worked impressively since running third in his debut, according to the DRF clocker report.
The fifth, scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the grass, is wide open. It can probably be pared down to Mathematician, Empirically, Finished, Hampton Point, Neepawa, Sargeant Drive, Piantagrane, and River Birch, who’s debuting with a superb turf pedigree.
