Gierkink: How I'd play Woodbine on Sunday, June 14
The very betable 11-race Woodbine Oaks card contains a trio of stakes: the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, the $150,000 Plate Trial and the $100,000 Alywow.
The Oaks and Trial make up half of the late pick four, a sequence that I’ll dive into. It has a guaranteed pool of $100,000.
PUNTROOSKI (4) sticks out in the eighth, even though he hasn’t found the mark since an impressive score in the Woodstock Stakes here in April of 2014. The last time he competed at this class - a second-level optional claimer - it came at Gulfstream and he finished second to Rock Fall. Rock Fall romped in last Saturday’s Grade 2 True North at Belmont and is among the leading sprinters on the continent. Puntrooski was a very wide third behind Calgary Cat here in the April 26 Jacques Cartier Stakes, and then finished a lapped-on second in the Grade 3 Vigil.
Several horses should be used in the ninth, the nine-furlong Plate Trial, aside from the classy favorites DANZIG MOON (12) and CONQUEST CURLINATE (10). DANISH DYNAFORMER (7) rallied stoutly for third in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes, his first start on the Polytrack. BEAR AT LAST (5) salvaged second despite a terrible trip in a recent Ontario-sired allowance. CONQUEST BOOGALOO (3) had nowhere to go in the stretch of the Marine.
One should also go deep in the nine-furlong Oaks, the 10th race. Morning-line favorite LONDON TOWER (6) will try to turn the trick with just a single prep under her girth. INTERNAL BOURBON (2), SEASON TICKET (3), GALINA POINT (4), BROOKLYNSWAY (5) and LEADING EDGE (8) are all in with a shot.
I’m anticipating the 11th to come off the grass. Regardless of the surface, I’m going with ROBIN’S SONG (3), COSMIC CHARLIE (4) and PHILIP THE TANK (8) in the one-mile maiden special for Ontario-sired stock.
The play
$1 pick four (races 8-11): 4/3-5-7-10-12/2-3-4-5-6-8/ 3-4-8 = $90
20-cent backup ticket: 3-12/3-5-7-10-12/2-3-4-5-6-8/3-4-8 = $36
