Giant Mischief, second in Springboard Mile, will point to Rebel Stakes

The 3-year-old colt Giant Mischief hasn’t posted a timed workout since finishing a troubled second in the Springboard Mile on Dec. 17 at Remington Park, but trainer Brad Cox said Wednesday that Giant Mischief would “return to the work tab this weekend” at Fair Grounds and is being aimed toward the $1 million Rebel Stakes on Feb. 25 at Oaklawn Park.
Giant Mischief, by Into Mischief, won his career debut in a 5 1/2-furlong sprint at Horseshoe Indianapolis before upsetting the Bob Baffert-trained odds-on favorite Arabian Lion in a Nov. 4 allowance race over seven furlongs at Keeneland. In his first try over a route of ground, he blew the break at Remington and raced from last, making a powerful sweeping move around the far turn to reach contention, eventually finishing second behind Wildatlanticstorm.
Cox took the colt to Oaklawn from Remington, giving him a short freshening before sending Giant Mischief back into more serious training in New Orleans.
“We just took a pause. We’ll get a run in the Rebel that hopefully shows us enough to take a swing in a Grade 1,” said Cox.
Cox’s top 2-year-old of 2022, Loggins, remains sidelined. Loggins, a game, tough, close second to subsequent Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Forte on Oct. 8 in the Breeders’ Futurity, has been out of action with an undisclosed injury since shortly after that start, the second of his career. Cox said Loggins was scheduled to be “checked out again in a couple weeks and hopefully cleared to resume training.”
