RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
ARCADIA, Calif. – Giant Expectations is bound for Gulfstream Park and the $16 million Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 27 following a fast workout at Santa Anita on Friday.
Clockers timed Giant Expectations in 58 seconds for five furlongs. Trainer Peter Eurton timed Giant Expectations in 46.60 seconds for the first half-mile and in 59 seconds for five furlongs.
“It was a little quicker than what I was looking for,” Eurton said.
Giant Expectations won the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes here on Dec. 26 to clinch his participation in the Pegasus World Cup, which like the San Antonio is run at 1 1/8 miles.
Giant Expectations was in full stride Friday well before the workout began at the half-mile pole. Giant Expectations worked past the finish line and into the first turn, weaving past a runner from another stable in the final furlong who had started a considerable distance in front.
“I didn’t think that would come into play,” Eurton said.
Owned by Ryan Exline, Justin Border, Dan Gatto, and Garrett Zubok, Giant Expectations has won 4 of 13 starts and earned $449,200. Giant Expectations won the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at seven furlongs at Del Mar last August and was later sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile there Nov. 3.
Giant Expectations is one of three Southern California-based runners for the Pegasus World Cup, along with Collected and West Coast, who were second and third in the BC Classic on Nov. 4.
