Giacomo, Hunters Bay among stallions at Heritage Stallions in Maryland

DRF Breeding Staff|Nov 18, 2013

Veterinarian Brooke Bowman and Louis Merryman have formed a new stallion operation, Heritage Stallions, on property that was formerly part of the original Windfields Farm near Chesapeake City, Md.

The farm’s inaugural stallion roster will include Hunters Bay, Canada’s champion older male of 2012, who retires to stud after a career that featured six wins in 14 starts for earnings of $611,091. Homebred in Kentucky by Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs, the 6-year-old Ghostzapper horse won the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes and Eclipse Stakes during his championship season.

With an advertised fee of $6,000, Hunters Bay will be the highest-priced stallion of the farm’s inaugural stallion roster, which also includes three transplants from Adena Springs’s Kentucky and Ontario farms: Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo ($5,000); Group 3 winner Plan ($4,000); and Grade 1 winner Showing Up ($3,000).

Joining them will be a pair of stallions owned by R. Larry Johnson. Street Magician, a Grade 3-winning son of Street Cry whose first crop of 2-year-olds will hit the track in 2014, will transfer from Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City and will stand for $3,000.

Johnson has also retired Grade 3 winner Despite the Odds to stand at Heritage Farm for a fee of $1,500. The 7-year-old Speightstown horse won four races in 19 starts for $261,429. He has not raced since 2011.

Prior to starting Heritage Stallions, Bowman worked as an attending veterinarian at several breeding operations. Merryman is a former general manager at Northview Stallion Station.

"We chose the name Heritage Stallions to reflect not only our family heritages, but the historic heritage of Maryland Thoroughbred breeding," said Bowman and Merryman in a joint statement. "With the recently adopted significant enhancements for Maryland breeders and the lucrative racing opportunities available at Maryland race tracks, we believe Heritage Stallions is the beginning of a new legacy."

Below are the advertised fees for the 2014 stallion roster at Heritage Stallions.

Despite the Odds (New) - $1,500
Giacomo - $5,000
Hunters Bay - $6,000
Plan - $4,000
Showing Up - $3,000
Street Magician - $3,000
