Gf Shes Sinful takes on boys in All American Derby
So far this year, the filly Gf Shes Sinful has beaten males in the Ruidoso Derby in June, and lowered the 440-yard track record at the Downs at Albuquerque in time trials for Sunday’s $1,080,992 All American Derby.
If she wins Sunday’s final, Gf Shes Sinful will become the first filly to win the nation’s richest Quarter Horse derby since Rustys Miracle in 2019.
Trained by Wes Giles for the All In Partners syndicate, Gf Shes Sinful has won 6 of 9 starts. On Aug. 9, Gf Shes Sinful won the sixth of eight trials for the All American Derby in record time of 20.54 seconds.
The win ended a two-race losing streak, the longest of her career. Gf Shes Sinful was second in a division of the Rainbow Oaks trials on June 28, and second in the $534,426 final on July 11 behind Toby Sis.
Later in July, Toby Sis was among a group of horses placed on a stewards list after owner Sam Valeriano was summarily suspended by Albuquerque stewards for alleged administration of illegal medications in recent years. The case has yet to be adjudicated. Toby Sis has not raced since the Rainbow Oaks.
Gf Shes Sinful, who will be ridden by Noe Garcia Jr., drew post 7 in a field of 10 in the All American Derby.
King of the Tide, winner of the $3 million All American Futurity at Albuquerque last September, starts from post 6. King of the Tide is winless in two starts this year, including a third behind Political Twist in a division of the All American Derby trials.
Political Twist, second in the 2025 All American Futurity, won the $756,800 Rainbow Derby at Albuquerque on July 11.
On Sunday, Political Twist starts from the outside in post 10. He won a division of the All American Derby trials in 20.75, the second-fastest qualifying time.
Gf Shes Sinful is the only filly in the All American Derby. There have been fewer fillies starting in the All American Derby in recent years following the launch of the All American Oaks for fillies in 2020.
Sunday’s $694,185 All American Oaks is led by fastest qualifier Full Moon Desire, who starts from the outside in post 10. Full Moon Desire won the fourth of five 440-yard time trials in 20.85 on Aug. 9 for her first win since the $307,955 Evangeline Downs Futurity in Louisiana last December.
Full Moon Desire has had a disrupted season. In April, she was among 57 horses trained by Leonardo Alcala who were placed on a stewards list by Remington Park over concern about the post-race condition of some runners from that stable in races in March and April.
Two other trainers, Josue Jacob Garcia and Jed Vane, had large numbers of horses also placed on the stewards list for the same reason. Some runners from the three stables were vanned from the racetrack.
Full Moon Desire has since been transferred to trainer Heber Deyta-Melendez.
