Andreas Suborics, one of the leading riders in Germany for the past two decades, has announced his retirement. Best known in America for winning the Arlington Million aboard Silvano in 2001, the 39-year-old Austrian had been kicked in the head by a horse in the paddock at Sha Tin in Hong Kong in March, since when doctors have advised against his return to the saddle. The champion rider in Germany in 2002, 2004, and 2006, Suborics rode more than 1,500 winners around the world. He partnered the sensational Hungarian sprinter Overdose four times, including the 2008 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, in which the undefeated Budapest Bullet crossed the line first in a race that was declared void when one of the starting gates failed to open.
