Thistledown

Genre scores in Lady Jacqueline Stakes

Byron King|Aug 27, 2016

Genre, the winner of the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher at Monmouth on July 31, scored her second consecutive stakes victory Saturday, taking the $200,000 Lady Jacqueline Stakes at Thistledown over the favored Penwith.

Rating in fourth behind a lively pace going 1 1/4 miles, Genre pounced on the leaders under Trevor McCarthy coming into the lane and maintained a 1 1/2-length margin of victory over Penwith, who had raced immediately behind her from the start. She completed the distance in a slow 2:05.48 over a dull racetrack.

The winner, a 4-year-old daughter of Bernardini owned by Cheyenne Stables, paid $5.60 as the second favorite in the field of eight.

Romantic Vision finished third, no match for the top two finishers, both graded stakes winners shipping into Thistledown for the lucrative purse.

One race earlier, Bold Cait ($7.20) narrowly prevailed in the $75,000 Pay the Man Stakes for Ohio-bred fillies and mares, recording a nose victory in a four-horse photo finish for the win. A 4-year-old daughter of Sun King trained by Eric Reed, she raced 1 1/8 miles under Edgar Paucar in 1:53.84.

Fast Justice, Morant Bay, and Needmore Flattery followed her across.
