SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – General Jim, a two-time graded stakes winner on dirt this year, will return to the turf in next Friday’s Grade 2, $500,000 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes. General Jim, a son of Into Mischief, won the Grade 3, Swale at Gulfstream Park in March and the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs in May. Most recently, however, he finished sixth, beaten 16 3/4 lengths, in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens at Belmont Park. At 2, General Jim won a maiden race on turf at Saratoga and a first-level allowance on turf at Keeneland. He ended his 2-year-old campaign with a third-place finish in the Central Park at Aqueduct. McGaughey said General Jim handled the firmer dirt tracks such as Gulfstream Park and Churchill better than he did the deep surface at Belmont. McGaughey believes the Saratoga track also is on the deep side. “I’m looking forward to running him, he’s training good,” McGaughey said. “The longer we go time-wise the better he’s going to be mentally.” General Jim has breezed twice on the turf at Saratoga. :: DRF's 2023 Saratoga headquarters: Previews, past performances, picks, recaps, news, and more.
