The stakes include the Gene Fleming Breeders’ Derby for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles (race 9), Dwight D. Patterson for 3-year-olds and up at a mile on the turf (race 8), Ann Owens Distaff for fillies and mares at six furlongs (race 6), Joanne Dye Breeders’ Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs (race 7), and Lyman and Bradley Rollins for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs (race 10). The Gene Fleming Breeders’ Derby drew a field of six, headed by U Can Do U. The gelded son of Lotsa Mischief has been the dominant Arizona-bred sophomore, coming into this off three straight stakes wins here. All his work, however, has come sprinting, so he tries a new, longer game here for trainer Kevin Eikleberry. Dwight D. Patterson Mr Navigator returns to defend his title against five in the one-mile grass event for trainer Jose Silva Jr. The 7-year-old gelded son of Uh Oh Bango may be rounding back to the form that saw him win this last year as he comes off an easy win going a mile on dirt here March 25. That was his second start after a long layoff. First Call was second in this last year and comes off a sharp third in a dirt sprint here April 17, while Mr Love Muffin, third in this last year, comes off a romping win over restricted claimers on this course at this trip April 18. Ann Owens Distaff Beyond Awesome and Outside the Law renew their rivalry against three others in this dash. The two have swapped victories in a number of events here, including the Cactus Flower on April 15 where Beyond Awesome prevailed by a neck over her rival for trainer Justin Evans. Outside the Law, trained by Stacy Campo, beat Beyond Awesome in a stakes here Feb. 1 and in an allowance sprint here March 18. Joanne Dye Breeders’ Oaks Arizona Reina is the only winner in this field of six, coming off a game maiden win here April 17 for trainer Shannon Simpson. She faces Desert Gal who she beat by a neck in that race. Desert Gal was sent off as the 3-10 favorite there for trainer Kevin Eikleberry. Both must deal with Oaklawn shipper Top Review who ran on for third in her only start there. She’s trained by Ryan Kenney. Lyman and Bradley Rollins Katar looms a short price as the 4-year-old son of Rocky Bar faces seven in this sprint for trainer Ryan Kenney. He looks formidable, having romped by 8 3/4 lengths in the Cactus Wren here April 15, his fourth win in his last five starts.
