OCEANPORT, N.J. – Trainer Danny Lopez believes the $75,000 Regret Stakes for fillies and mares on Saturday at Monmouth Park will be the sweet spot for his homebred, Geeky Gorgeous. The 5-year-old Geeky Gorgeous won this six-furlong race last year in a 14-1 upset, one of three victories in a solid season for the New Jersey-bred who has never backed down in open company. The Regret is the main attraction on Monmouth’s Ladies Day that includes a fashion show in the Lady’s Secret Café and courtesy flowers for the first 1,000 women who attend. Geeky Gorgeous faces seven rivals in search of her first win this year. She was fourth in the Dashing Beauty Stakes to kick off her campaign on June 12 in the slop at Delaware Park. She wheeled back 10 days later with a rallying third in Monmouth’s Red Cross Stakes with Joe Bravo aboard. :: DRF Live: Get real-time updates and insights from DRF reporters and handicappers starting at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday “Last time when Joe took a hold of her and took her outside and I think that’s what got her beat,” Lopez said. “She wound up fanned really wide. I thought if he stayed on the inside and waited, they’d be a lot closer.” Angel Serpa now gets the mount. “She usually gets better by the third race,” Lopez said. “I don’t have any negatives.” Race 10 KEY CONTENDERS Geeky Gorgeous (Last 3 Beyers: 85-76-99) ◗ She makes third start of the season with Beyers on the upswing. She missed by only 2 3/4 lengths last time with a wide rally, and had a three-furlong blowout in a snappy 36.20 seconds on Thursday morning. ◗ The daughter of Devil His Due loves this track, hitting the board in 14 of 15 starts here, and seven of her eight career wins have come at Monmouth. Salamera (Last 3 Beyers: 81-82-71) ◗ The daughter of Successful Appeal shipped north from Florida for this race, a sign of positive intent, and she looks to improve on her recent stakes pattern: four straight third-place finishes. She also needs to push her Beyers higher to compete in this spot. ◗ The 4-year-old filly should be a major factor in the early pace from the rail with Paco Lopez, the meet’s leading rider, aboard. Champaign Rain (Last 3 Beyers: 83-57-57) ◗ She took a big step forward with a career-best Beyer victory last time out at the expense of second-level statebreds. This race will be much tougher, but the filly offers betting value. ◗ This is another runner who is very comfortable at Monmouth, with a record of 3-1-1 in 9 starts here.
