Trainer Danny Gargan, best known for winning the 2024 Belmont Stakes with Dornoch, will begin serving a 10-day suspension on Dec. 7 after acknowledging that he worked a horse within a stand-down period that is required for horses that receive joint injections. In an agreed order between Gargan and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, Gargan acknowledged that his horse Capo Di Tutti, a 2-year-old stabled at Belmont Park, received an intra-articular injection of a corticosteroid on Oct. 23 and was then breezed on Oct. 29. HISA regulations require a seven-day stand-down between the treatment and a workout. While a first violation of the rule does not require a suspension, Gargan had acknowledged a violation of the same rule in August with a different horse. A second violation within 365 days requires a suspension and a $6,000 fine. The stand-down periods are required because injections of corticosteroids can have long-lasting painkilling effects at the site of the injection, according to HISA. Gargan has won 20 races from 106 starts this year with purse earnings of $1.64 million. Last year, with Dornoch in the barn, Gargan won 27 of 147 races with $4.5 million in purse earnings. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
