OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Owen Garber, who has spent about the last year in New York as an assistant to William Morey, has embarked on his own training career and sends out his first starter, Agent Creed, on Friday at Aqueduct in a New York-bred second-level allowance scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on turf. Garber said he has been involved in racing from a young age, working for his grandfather Ed Keenan, who trained primarily on the West Virginia circuit. Garber then worked in the Mid-Atlantic region for trainers Kevin Patterson and Irving Velez, among others. Garber moved a few years ago to Kentucky, where he met Morey, who had him come to New York for the past year. Morey has departed New York, and Garber opted to stay and try training on his own. “I had a few really good clients in my corner. They were kind of pushing me,” said Garber, who declined to give his age. “At NYRA, when the opportunity presents itself, you have to do it. I have a lot of confidence in myself. I was able to keep a lot of the people that were with me when I was with Bill. We know how to win races on this circuit.” Agent Creed is one of three horses Garber has in his barn, though he anticipates being active at the claim box when he becomes eligible. “That’s a part of the game I’m a huge fan of,” he said. Agent Creed has been in Garber’s care for about three weeks. Owner Mark Vondrasek moved the horse to Garber since his previous trainer, Steve Asmussen, decided not to maintain a regular New York string. Garber said he is hoping jockey Trevor McCarthy can keep Agent Creed a little closer to the pace on Friday than the horse was in his previous start, when he rallied from 11 lengths back to finish second in this same condition. “He’s a horse who doesn’t go faster, but his stride gets longer,” Garber said. “He has one big move. That move is not a quick one, it takes a while to get going.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Agent Creed is one of five horses coming out of this same conditioned race on Sept. 15. Let’s Go Big Blue, third as the favorite that day, came back to run sixth in an off-the-turf race here Oct. 15. Others from that Sept. 15 race that are back in here include King of Comedy, Rough Draft, and Citizen K. Itsallcomintogetha, trained by Phil Serpe, is making his first start since Aug. 13, when he finished fourth in the Rick Violette. In his start previous to that, Itsallcomintogetha was a front-running winner of the Cab Calloway division of the New York Stallion Stakes. Born Dancer, trained by Michelle Nevin, has won two straight on the front end, those wins coming in June at Belmont and August at Saratoga. Steelersfanforlife, Runningwscissors, and Curly Larry and Mo round out the field on turf, the only race scheduled for the grass Friday. Should this race be moved to the main track, General Banker, Zeebear, and Prince of Pharoahs would draw into the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
