OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Owen Garber, still in search of his first win as a trainer since going out on his own last fall, sends out the intriguing Bless America in Friday’s first-level allowance feature scheduled for 1 1/16 miles over Aqueduct’s inner turf course. Garber, a former assistant to William Morey, has sent out just six runners, with a second and a third, since last November. Bless America is a recent acquisition as he was purchased out of a Fasig-Tipton digital auction in March. A gelding by Into Mischief, Bless America sold for $145,000, the fourth-highest price from that sale and was bought by Mark Vondrasek’s Green with MV Stable. Bless America, previously trained by Eoin Harty, has a record of 1-1-1 from three starts, all over Turfway Park’s synthetic surface. He is coming out of a win going a mile on Feb. 24. “He seemed like a very versatile horse with plenty of conditions,” Garber said. “We bought him with the turf in mind but we’re not limited to that.” Garber said Bless America is a bit of a quirky horse and “we’ve tweaked a few things to find what works best,” he said. “I’m liking him more and more each day he’s in the barn.” Garber has worked Bless America three times since he’s had him, all out of the gate. Additionally, Garber felt that when Bless America made the lead in his last race, he started looking around. Garber is adding cheek pieces to the gelding’s equipment Friday. Garber did not want to use blinkers because “he’s not a horse that needs to be closed up. We’re trying a little something to make him focus.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Eric Cancel rides Bless America from post 3 in this full field of 12. Going Concern, trained by Chad Brown, will most likely be favored. A English-bred son of Kingman, Going Concern rallied from next to last at Tampa Bay Downs to win his one and only start Feb. 24. He had to steady slightly approaching the top of the stretch and then had to squeeze through a narrow opening while appearing to brush the rail in midstretch when put in tight by race runner-up Legitimize. Brown came into the week having won 11 of the last 13 Aqueduct races in which he’s had starters, and has won three of the first five turf races offered at the meet. Manny Franco rides Going Concern from post 5. Right to his outside is Betterdaysrcoming, an Irish-bred who is making his first start since June, first in the United States, and first for Christophe Clement. He went 2 for 11 in Europe for trainer Andy Oliver. A handicap that he won last May at The Curragh in Ireland proved to be a productive race, with several of the horses who finished behind him coming back to win at least once. Dylan Davis rides Betterdaysrcoming, who shows nine works, all at Payson Park. Landbiscuit makes his 6-year-old debut for trainer Bruce Brown. When last seen, Landbiscuit was beaten a nose in a first-level allowance last October at Laurel Park. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
