Gamine looms over Great Lady M. field

Led by Gamine, the champion female sprinter of 2020, Monday’s Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes at Los Alamitos has a probable field of seven fillies and mares.

Gamine is unbeaten in two starts this year, including the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff on May 1 at Churchill Downs. Her main rival in the $200,000 Great Lady M. Stakes is Edgeway, the sharp winner of the Carousel Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs on April 10 at Oaklawn Park.

The field for the Great Lady M. Stakes, run at 6 1/2 furlongs, is expected to include Bella Vita, Candura, Dynasty of Her Own, Qahira, and Road Rager.

Monday’s program is the final day of the two-week Los Alamitos summer meeting. Live daytime Thoroughbred racing in Southern California resumes with the opening day of the Del Mar summer meeting on July 16.

◗ Uncle Boogie, second in the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar last November, was euthanized in late June after suffering an injury during training, according to the California Horse Racing Board’s website.

Owned by Eric Homme and trained by Andrew Lerner, Uncle Boogie won 2 of 6 starts and earned $67,250. He started in three stakes, with the second-place finish in the Hope his best result. Uncle Boogie was last of five in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs at Santa Anita in January in his final start.
