LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ten new names are in the lineup for the fourth and final pool in the 2019 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Friday at noon Eastern for the customary three-day run. The morning line for Pool 4 as set forth by Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia shows 8-1 co-favorites in Game Winner and Maximum Security – but with three major Derby preps to be run Saturday, there figures to be plenty of movement in odds by the time the pool closes Sunday. The new names are Bodexpress, By My Standards, Cutting Humor, Haikal, Long Range Toddy, Maximum Security, Omaha Beach, Outshine, Plus Que Parfait, and Tacitus. Gone from Pool 3 are Country House, Dream Maker, Gunmetal Gray, Harvey Wallbanger, Hidden Scroll, Intrepid Heart, Mind Control, Mucho Gusto, Tax, and Well Defined. Win and exacta wagering are available, with odds and will-pays locked in only when the pool closes Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern. Nine of the Pool 4 horses are expected to be in action Saturday: Haikal, Outshine, and Tacitus in the Wood Memorial; Signalman, Vekoma, and Win Win Win in the Blue Grass Stakes; and Game Winner, Instagrand, and Roadster in the Santa Anita Derby. The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, closed as the favorite in all three previous pools. Pool 1 was held Nov. 22-25, Pool 2 from Feb. 8-10, and Pool 3 from March 8-10. Aggregate handle for the first three pools (not including the Sires future wager or Kentucky Oaks futures) stands at $1,177,829. The record aggregate for the four Derby pools is $1,893,353, set last year. Combined handle on Pool 4 in 2018 was $543,010, up 23 percent over the corresponding pool in 2017. Last year in Pool 4, the eventual Derby winner, Justify, closed as the 3-1 favorite; he returned $7.80 in Derby Day mutuels. In Pool 4 in 2017, the eventual winner, Always Dreaming, closed as the 6-1 second choice and later returned $11.40 in Derby Day mutuels. Only five horses have been listed as individual interests in all four pools for the 2019 Derby: Game Winner, Improbable, Instagrand, Signalman, and Vekoma. In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination. The 145th Derby will be run May 4. Ky.
