'Game' goes for 3rd straight

DRF Staff|Oct 11, 2001

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Top of Our Game tries to stretch her winning streak to three in Saturday's $50,000 Hillsborough Handicap for fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

Top of Our Game, trained by Carla Gaines, won a mile allowance race Aug. 17 at Del Mar, rallying from just off the pace to win by a head. She followed that race with a victory in the $125,000 Solana Beach Handicap at Del Mar, defeating Hillsborough opponent Mimi's Cafe by 2 1/2 lengths.

Top of Our Game has six wins from 14 starts and has banked over $323,000. Top of Our Game is the 121-pound topweight in a field of nine and will be ridden by Brice Blanc.

Mimi's Cafe comes off a victory in the $100,000 Las Madrinas Handicap at Fairplex and finished second to Top of Our Game at Del Mar in her previous start. She captured the Lady Morvich Handicap on the turf here during the San Mateo Fair meet in August.

Mimi's Cafe has seven victories and earnings in excess of $355,000. Russell Baze has a return call on Mimi's Cafe, who is trained by Terry Knight.

Glorious Linda is another logical contender in the Hills-borough. Glorious Linda, who has five wins in nine starts this year, defeated Shericaine by neck in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race on this course last out on Sept. 23.

Aviate and Sky High Dancer are each capable of upsetting in the Hillsborough. Aviate finished well last out to be beaten only a neck by Mimi's Cafe in the Lady Morvich in August. Aviate gained her only victory this year over the turf at Santa Anita, dead-heating with Mary Kies.

Sky High Dancer returns to northern California after an unsuccessful summer trip to Mountaineer Park. She finished seventh and eighth in a pair of handicaps at the West Virginia track. Sky High Dancer has used her late kick to win four races here for trainer Don Roberson.

Shericaine has been lightly raced since arriving in this country last year from France, where she won three races. She made only one start last year, finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap. In her only race this year, she wound up second behind Glorious Linda Sept. 23.
