ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer James Bentley Begg, known as Jamie to his friends, has been on a bit of a roll at Woodbine. The former New York assistant to trainer Mark Casse sends out Galley Head in her quest to win her third consecutive race in Thursday’s fourth. Galley Head captured a 1 1/16-mile starter allowance/optional claimer over the Tapeta at Gulfstream Park on March 26, earning a career-high 77 Beyer Speed Figure. She shortened up to 6 1/2 furlongs here most recently and came from fourth to land a Tapeta sprint with a 73 Beyer. The versatile Galley Head switches to the main turf in another 6 1/2-furlong starter allowance/optional claimer on Thursday with Sofia Vives back in the saddle. “I think she’s probably improving coming out of [her last] race,” Begg said. “A lot of people believe that she’s a better Tapeta horse than she is on turf, but I’m not sure that’s actually the case.” Her main rivals include Sassy Melissa and Holiday With Amy. The race could set up for one of them if front-runners Strike a Chord and Lady in Red hook up on the lead. Sassy Melissa is protected by waiver in her first outing since a ninth-place finish Oct. 10. She won three of nine starts last year while competing on turf and Tapeta, earning a pair of 78 Beyers when first and second in back-to-back main turf sprints in July. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Leading rider Pietro Moran takes over on Sassy Melissa for trainer Marty Drexler, who has scored at a 23 percent clip with new acquisitions exiting a layoff of least six months during the past five years, with a return on investment of $2.08. Holiday With Amy benefited from a rail bias on the Tapeta when beating $25,000 nonwinners-of-three claimers in her second start of the season June 14, earning her second consecutive 73 Beyer. Her turf form is spotty and was highlighted by a maiden special weight triumph in 2023 at Fort Erie, which is probably equivalent to beating $15,000 maidens at Woodbine. Leo Salles will ride Holiday With Amy again for trainer Patrick Dixon, who has fared okay third time off a layoff with runners in recent years. Strike a Chord was overhauled late by a flying Stolen when second in her five-furlong season opener. She dropped and popped most recently, wiring $7,500 conditioned claimers going 5 1/2 furlongs. She has placed in both of her turf starts, including a third behind Little Teddy and Olivia Rose in a five-furlong inner turf stakes for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies last summer. Lady in Red went coast-to-coast in two inner turf events in 2024, both around two turns. When going a mile off a seven-month layoff at this class level June 12, she led until the far turn before emptying out, a race she seemingly needed. Rounding out the field are Hard to Capture, Very Savvy, and Lois Len. Post time for the eight-race card is 3:10 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
