Jockey Antonio Gallardo reached the career 2,000-win milestone when Do What It Takes fought back for a narrow victory Wednesday in the fourth race at Tampa Bay Downs. Do What It Takes, a 5-year-old New York-bred mare, appeared beaten when passed on the outside by Exceed the Goal in deep stretch of the seven-furlong race for $5,000 claimers, but she re-rallied to prevail by a nose. Do What It Takes, trained by Jose Delgado for Carole Star Stables, returned $9.40 after finishing in 1:25.51 over a fast track. Gallardo entered this week at the Oldsmar, Fla., track with 1,999 wins, with 836 of those having come at Tampa. The 33-year-old native of Cadiz, Spain, rode his first winner in the United States in 2009 and has won five riding titles at Tampa. Click to learn more. Gallardo and Samy Camacho are locked in a heated battle for the top spot at the 2020-21 Tampa meet, with Camacho starting the Wednesday card with a 46-44 edge. The meet effectively runs through May 2.
