Gallardo poised to hit 2,000 wins

Antonio Gallardo is nearing the 2,000-win milestone after riding two winners Sunday. Gallardo enters this week with 1,997 wins, with 834 of those having come at Tampa.

Gallardo, 33, is a native of Cadiz, Spain. He rode his first winner in the United States in 2009 and has won five riding titles at Tampa. He and Samy Camacho are locked in a heated battle for the top spot at the 2020-21 meet, with Camacho clinging to a 43-42 lead entering this week.

Six in turf-sprint feature

Another four-day week at Tampa gets under way Wednesday at 12:42 p.m. Eastern with a $22,750 turf-sprint allowance as the opener. Agog, with Camacho riding, is the 3-2 morning-line favorite in a field of six 3-year-old fillies.

All other races are for maidens or claimers. There’s a $3,192 jackpot carryover in the 20-cent Ultimate 6 (races 4-9). The local forecast calls for a possibility of rain and temperatures in the high 70s.

◗ A couple of pick five carryovers produced sizable handle last week. New money into the late pick five Friday was $270,516, while a carryover from Saturday led to $210,244 in new wagers Sunday.

◗ Trainer Jon Arnett has made an impact in his first full meet at Tampa as he enters this week third in the local standings with 13 wins. Arnett, an Arizona native, has campaigned primarily in the Midwest and Southwest in a career dating to 1979.
