SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Jockey Tyler Gaffalione will serve a four-day suspension, Thursday through Sunday, after he was cited by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority for misuse of the whip during the running of the third race at Saratoga on Aug. 8.
According to a ruling on the HISA website, Gaffalione struck San Siro eight times – two more than permitted – during an allowance race that the horse won by a half-length.
Gaffalione, who was also fined $2,000, was suspended four days because it was his fourth whip violation within a 180-day period. Gaffalione was cited for misuse of the whip in March at Gulfstream, April at Keeneland, and June at Churchill Downs. For those violations, Gaffalione served seven days’ worth of suspensions and paid $2,862 in fines.
Gaffalione ranks sixth in the Saratoga jockey standings with 18 wins from 129 starters at this meet.
