Gabriel Charles ‘day to day’ after colic surgery

DEL MAR, Calif. – Gabriel Charles, a Grade 1 winner in July who underwent colic surgery last Saturday, will remain at a veterinary clinic in Bonsall, Calif., until at least late August, said trainer Jeff Mullins.
Gabriel Charles was rushed to the clinic after showing signs of distress after training last Saturday, Mullins said. Surgery was conducted that afternoon.
Mullins described Gabriel Charles’s condition as “day to day.”
“They’ve fed him small portions throughout the day,” he said. “He’ll be there for a couple of weeks. As far as the internal part goes, he’s lost a lot of weight.”
Owned by Sam Britt and Michael House, Gabriel Charles won Del Mar’s richest turf race, the Grade 1, $400,000 Eddie Read Stakes on July 18. Gabriel Charles has won 4 of 11 starts and earned $584,400. The Read was his third start of the year after missing all of 2014 because of a tendon injury.
