Future Wager Pool 2 has 8 new names
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Eight new names are among the 23 separately listed betting interests in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens its customary four-day run Thursday at noon.
Three 3-year-olds with impressive recent wins - Wimbledon, Eddington, and Imperialism - are among the new horses in Pool 2. But even with all the comings and goings, Daily Racing Form national handicapper Mike Watchmaker has released a morning line listing Read the Footnotes as the 6-1 favorite, a relatively high number that reflects the unsettled outlook for the 130th Derby at Churchill Downs.
After Read the Footnotes, Watchmaker listed Eurosilver and the mutuel field as co-second choices at 8-1, followed by Lion Heart at 12-1 and six horses at 15-1. The field, or the 24th and "all others" option, closed as the 9-5 favorite in Pool 1, which was conducted Feb. 12-15.
Many of the Pool 2 favorites will be in action Saturday at Gulfstream Park or Santa Anita, and fans have the option of waiting until after those races have been run to place their bets. The pool closes Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
Eight horses were dropped from Pool 1 because of illness, injury, or poor performance in their respective last starts. Those dropped were Capac, Gran Prospect, Lucky Pulpit, Second of June, Shaniko, Silver Wagon, Sir Oscar, and Tiger Hunt.
The other new additions to Pool 2 are Limehouse, Redskin Warrior, Rock Hard Ten, Swingforthefences, and Value Plus.
Meanwhile, the lineup for Pool 2 of the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which is being conducted concurrently with the Derby Futures, is once again headed by Halfbridled, the 7-2 favorite in Pool 1. Watchmaker has listed Halfbridled as the 4-1 choice on his morning line for the Oaks Futures, followed by Madcap Escapade at 6-1 and A.P. Adventure at 8-1. All three of those fillies are scheduled to race this weekend.
Six fillies have been added to Pool 2: Daydreaming, Ender's Sister, Galloping Gal, Rare Gift, Shadow Cast, and Stellar Jayne. They replace Allswellthatnswell, Cherry Bomb, Lotta Kim, Rahy Dolly, Saltwater Runner, and Whoopi Cat from Pool 1.
The third and final pool for both the Oaks and Derby will be held April 1-4.
Handle in Pool 1 was $536,958 for the Derby and $66,425 for the Oaks. The Future Wager, a $2-minimum, win-only wager, is available in 36 states. Results are predicated on the April 30 Oaks and May 1 Derby. There are no refunds in the case of a horse being declared from contention.
