OLDSMAR, Fla. – Futile will look to extend his winning streak to four races when he makes his stakes debut in the $100,000 Pelican Stakes on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs. The six-furlong sprint drew a field of eight older horses and shares a card with the $50,000 Minaret Stakes, another six-furlong sprint that drew a field of nine older fillies and mares. Futile, a homebred for the Lael Stables of Roy and Gretchen Jackson, impressed in his first start here Jan. 15, tracking the pace in a no-conditions, $25,750 allowance and pulling clear for a one-length victory over Tiger Blood, who also returns in the Pelican. Futile finished the six-furlong allowance in a snappy 1:09.91 and earned a career-best 86 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest last-race mark in Saturday’s field. Trained by Arnaud Delacour, Futile has won four of five starts, including allowance wins at Delaware Park and Penn National last fall to cap his 3-year-old season. He has improved his Beyers in each start. “I think it’s a logical spot for him to try next,” Delacour said. “It looks like a good field that he beat last time, so he deserves a shot at the stakes level. We brought him along very slowly last year because he had a few issues, and I think he’s been improving and could be a very useful horse for those stakes this summer in the Mid-Atlantic. He’s been doing well.” Pelican Stakes, Race 10 KEY CONTENDERS Futile, by Broken Vow Last 3 Beyers: 86-81-80 ◗ Delacour has outstanding numbers with horses coming off a victory, having won with 24 of his last 73 such starters (33 percent) for a $2.45 return on investment. Leading jockey Daniel Centeno retains the mount and has won with 18 of his last 66 mounts here (27 percent) for Delacour. Tiger Blood, by Cowtown Cat Last 3 Beyers: 83-81-53 ◗ Seemingly everything sent out by trainer Darien Rodriguez at this meet has been well meant, as his runners have compiled a 16-4-5-2 record here. ◗ Tiger Blood clearly likes the main track here, having gone 3 for 5 with a second-place finish on it, and the bullet five-furlong workout in 1:00.60 on Feb. 4 adds to his appeal. Gorgeous Bird, by Unbridled’s Song Last 3 Beyers: 79-82-81 ◗ The winner of the $50,000 Don Bernhardt Stakes at Ellis Park last summer, Gorgeous Bird has been training well at Palm Meadows for trainer Ian Wilkes, who won the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes here last weekend with McCraken. Gorgeous Bird fired a bullet five-furlong workout in 59 seconds on turf at Palm Meadows on Feb. 10 to cap a steady string of six workouts since Jan. 5. ◗ He sheds blinkers after eight consecutive starts with the equipment and will have Ronnie Allen Jr. aboard for the first time while making his first start since October. No Fault of Mine in Minaret No Fault of Mine, a runner-up in four stakes, including the Grade 2 Golden Rod and Grade 3 Arlington Matron, broke through for her first stakes win here Jan. 21, taking the $50,000 Wayward Lass by 2 1/2 lengths. She will look to double up in the Minaret, which might be the final start of her career, according to trainer Chris Block. No Fault of Mine will be shortening up from 1 1/16 miles to six furlongs for the Minaret, but her affinity for the main track here, where she has two wins and a second-place finish in three starts, gives Block confidence. “We feel good about Saturday,” Block said. “I’m not sure six furlongs is her best distance, but she’s proven that she’s adaptable and can either sprint or stretch out, and she’ll give a good, hard effort like she always does. She has performed well on that surface and trains well on that surface at Tampa. We do know that she likes it.” No Fault of Mine finished second in the Minaret last year, beaten 4 1/4 lengths by You Bought Her, who won the race for the second consecutive year. You Bought Her, trained by David Hinsley, is back again Saturday in what likely is the final start of her career. You Bought Her most recently was fifth last month in the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The race also includes the stakes winners Southern Ring and Mines and Magic. Southern Ring, trained by Malcolm Pierce, won the Grade 3 Ontario Fashion Stakes at this distance on Woodbine’s synthetic surface last fall and has been training sharply here for her first race on dirt. Mines and Magic, trained by Vicki Oliver, is cross-entered in the $60,000 White Pearl Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. She hasn’t raced since winning the $100,000 Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs last September and shows only three recent breezes at Payson Park in south Florida.
