Fuscetta could cap big Jackpot Hi 5 payout
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Woodbine’s Jackpot Hi 5 pool could approach $300,000 heading into Friday’s nightcap, a $58,600, first-level allowance. The fast-working Fuscetta could turn back effectively in the six-furlong turf dash.
Fuscetta, a German import trained by Hall of Famer Roger Attfield, weakened to second after hitting the front in the stretch in her season opener, a one-mile allowance in April at Keeneland. She subsequently finished eighth here in the Grade 2 Nassau Stakes behind the likes of champions Lexie Lou and Strut the Course.
Fuscetta missed the board in two subsequent allowances but is coming off a game second in a one-mile allowance Aug. 28. She prevailed in a front-end battle in that race before giving way late to a rejuvenated Gliding By.
Fuscetta has worked two bullets since a strong five-furlong breeze in 59.80 seconds on the Tapeta on Sept. 11. She has never competed on synthetics, and with rain in the forecast Friday, she could end up experimenting on the main track, which might not be a bad thing.
KEY CONTENDERS
Fuscetta, by Tiger Hill
Last 3 Beyers: 77-70-65
◗ In a 10-horse field, she drew favorably in post 2.
◗ Her new rider, Patrick Husbands, has impressive recent numbers when riding for Attfield. He won for Attfield on Danish Dynaformer in the Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes.
Street Cash, by Street Boss
Last 3 Beyers: 77-71-51
◗ Just one start removed from her graduation, she finished second three weeks ago to the favored Conquest Babayaga in a 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint. The third-place finisher exited to capture another allowance.
Sugar Jones, by Old Forester
Last 3 Beyers: 69-53-77
◗ She looked to have a productive future after winning her first two outings, but things went awry after she was a troubled second in the Passing Mood Stakes on July 2. A wide trip worked against her most recently when eighth in the key La Prevoyante Stakes, which contained two next-out winners. The La Prevoyante winner, Shake Down Baby, lost her next start in the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen by a nose to Caren.
Mozambique Gold, by Northern Afleet
Last 3 Beyers: 77-84-67
◗ She awaited room early in the stretch before closing for third behind Gliding By and Fuscetta last time out, four weeks after ending up second to the talented Smart Mission in another allowance.
Kasuga, by Temple City
Last 3 Beyers: 75-81-80
◗ She romped in back-to-back right-handed turf sprints early in the summer and is coming off a wide fourth for $32,000, from which she was claimed by trainer Marty Drexler.
