Funny Guy might get shot at big time in Whitney

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Funny Guy, winner of the Commentator Stakes for New York-breds on June 12, is being seriously considered for the Grade 1, $750,000 Whitney here on Aug. 1, trainer John Terranova said Thursday.
The combination of a lack of a New York-bred option going long at this meet and the fact Funny Guy is training so well is what led Terranova to look at the Whitney.
“We’re pointing towards it, let’s just say, because he’s really training great,” Terranova said. “I love what he did in the Commentator and he just came out of it tremendous. He deserves a shot at something. He’s not ordinary, I’ll you that. He’s changed a tremendous amount. He’s more developed now, everything is going really well for him right now. He’s showing us all the right stuff.”

Among the horses under consideration for the Whitney as this stage are Tom’s d’Etat, winner of the Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs, and Code of Honor, third in the Met Mile.
Terranova will start his first stakes horse of the meet Sunday when he sends out Mirabell Mei in Sunday’s Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes.

Mirabell Mei won a 1 1/8-mile maiden race at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 15 before coming back three weeks later and finishing eighth in the Grade 3 Florida Oaks.
“I ran her back too quick,” Terranova said. “She was a filly that was still developing at that point. It was a big field, a big day. She’s now nice and fresh and has grown up a little bit, and we’ve already been the mile and an eighth.”
Others entered in the Lake Placid were Blame Debbie, Cat’s Pajamas, Evil Lyn, Key Biscayne, Lashara, Speaktomeofsummer, and Queen’s Embrace.
