Fully Subscribed put another graded stakes field away in short order on Sunday at Aqueduct, motoring home to a four-length victory in the Grade 3 Comely. The 3-year-old filly, coming off a commanding win in the Grade 2 Mother Goose last month, looked just as sharp in her first race under jockey Flavien Prat. “It felt like the pace wasn't crazy and I wanted to keep her in a good position,” Prat said. “But [trainer Chad Brown] told me she was a good filly and she had a good run, and she showed it." After two defeats in September while facing older allowance rivals, Fully Subscribed has now won two straight graded stakes against 3-year-old fillies for Brown. She has shown considerable ability at 1 1/8 miles, a distance she completed in 1:50.55 on Sunday. She was given a 92 Beyer Speed Figure. In the Mother Goose last month, jockey Dylan Davis had guided the filly Tiz the Law to a 4 1/2-length victory from seventh, but Prat kept her much closer to the early lead in Sunday's Comely. The 1-2 favorite tracked just behind Kappa Kappa, the Grade 2 Raven Run winner in October, into the first turn through an opening quarter-mile in 24.01 seconds. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! I felt like I was in control the whole way.” By the time Kappa Kappa breezed through a half-mile in 49.23, the three graded stakes winners in the field of seven had taken the first three positions. Quietside, winner of the Grade 2 Fantasy and Grade 3 Honeybee earlier this year, advanced into third on the backstretch and briefly gave chase when Fully Subscribed and Prat launched their bid on the far turn. After the race, however, jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. said that his filly was simply “second-best.” When Kappa Kappa gave way on the far turn and Quietside failed to stack up for trainer John Ortiz, Fully Subscribed powered away without further incident. She paid $3.14 in another straightforward victory. Quietside lost ground late, but held on by a nose for second, edging Ourdaydreaminggirl, a 19-1 shot trained by Lou Linder Jr. Yes It Tiz, the fourth-place finisher in the Comely, was still in the hands of the assistant starter at the break and was declared a non-starter. Garland of Roses Stakes Hold Your Breath has had limited experience racing on dirt, but the 3-year-old filly proved a quick study in the $150,000 Garland of Roses Stakes on Sunday at Aqueduct. Jockey Joel Rosario didn’t try anything special in her first stakes start against older rivals, kicking away to the fourth front-running victory of her career. “[Trainer John Servis] told me to just let her [break] out of there and she’s fast,” Rosario said. “We were in a good spot on the outside. She came out of there running nice. She ran very good. She had another gear, and the whole time, she was there for me.” Hold Your Breath raced on turf and synthetic at five different tracks for Servis between June and October, striking in a Saratoga allowance before suffering four straight losses while gradually stretching out in distance. As a juvenile, the filly earned her maiden victory on dirt at Parx Racing, which only made it so surprising when she cut back on the Pennsylvania surface to win an allowance by 9 3/4 lengths on Nov. 12. All of the McKinzie filly’s victories have come on the front end in sprints, and at six furlongs Sunday Rosario was always going to send her from the far outside post in the field of seven. She broke so alertly that Rosario briefly had to slow things down through an opening quarter-mile in 22.93 seconds. She maintained a one-length advantage through a half-mile in 46.07. “She got out of there and she looked like she wanted to go, and she loved to be up there,” Rosario said. “After that, I just let her do her thing and she just took me for a ride.” With the Angels, the 3-2 favorite trained by Linda Rice, stalked in second all the way and made a bid on the far turn. Sunday Girl also made a move from sixth, but the David Duggan filly had little to offer the top two. With a short lead turning for home, Hold Your Breath seemed ready to cave to the heavy favorite, who was bearing down on her on the outside under jockey Flavien Prat. Rosario kept asking for more, however, and when the front-runner dug in for the final run to the wire, With the Angels couldn’t find another gear. Turning away her only challenger, Hold Your Breath cruised home to a two-length victory, completing the six-furlong distance in 1:09.76. She paid $8.08 to win. With the Angels finished 3 1/4 lengths ahead of Patricia Ann, who stalked in third early for trainer Carlos Martin and took the position back from Sunday Girl when that rival faded in the stretch. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
