ETOBICOKE, Ontario - An $80,000 full brother to stakes winner Double Malt headed the open session of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society’s annual yearling sale at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion on Saturday. Trainer Bob Tiller, as agent for 3 Sons Racing Stable, purchased the sale topper, a son of Whiskey Wisdom, from agent Kingstead Stable. In contrast to Tuesday’s select session, the open session yielded sharp gains in both gross and average. A total of 166 yearlings sold for $1,251,400, which was 47 percent higher than last year, when 148 head grossed $851,800. The average of $7,539 was a 31 percent increase from last year’s average of $5,755. Sixty yearlings were listed as not sold, compared with 49 in 2009. Two yearlings sold for $45,000 apiece, and they were both purchased by Bear Stable. The first was a Philanthropist colt consigned by Paradox Farm, and the second was an Old Forester filly sold by John Carey as agent for T.C. Westmeath Stud Farm. Next in line was a $40,000 colt by Weather Warning, who was sold by Cara Bloodstock to Brian Lynch as agent for Wesley Ward.
