HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A graded-stakes-caliber field topped by Frostmourne and Conquest Enforcer will square off under high-level allowance and optional-claiming conditions going one mile on turf in Friday’s $58,000 main event at Gulfstream Park. Frostmourne has not started since finishing fourth, beaten less than a length, in the Grade 3 Hill Prince at Belmont Park five months ago. That outing capped off a 3-year-old campaign during which he won the Grade 2 Penn Mile and Grade 3 Kent for trainer Christophe Clement. Frostmourne, a homebred son of Speighstown owned by Green Lantern Stables, also was a stakes winner at 2. “He’d been running all year, so we just gave him some time off after the Hill Prince,” said Clement. “He’s training very well, although he’s not 100 percent cranked up for this start. We’ll run him there and go on to better things.” Clement said that if Frostmourne runs well on Friday, he would be considered for the Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland on April 13. Conquest Enforcer will stretch out off a couple of five-furlong sprints that came after he returned to trainer Mark Casse’s barn last fall following a stretch with three other trainers. Conquest Enforcer, a Canadian-bred son of Into Mischief, began his career at Woodbine with Casse as a 2-year-old in 2015. He is winless in six tries since capturing the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile at Santa Anita for trainer Phil D’Amato in December 2016. Conquest Enforcer is owned by Imaginary Stables and Raquel Ritchie. Frostmourne and Conquest Enforcer aren’t the only stakes-tested members of the field. Profiteer, third last fall at Laurel in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Derby, finished second behind Grade 1 winner Ring Weekend under similar allowance conditions here last month. Trainer Shug McGaughey equipped Profiteer with blinkers for the first time in that race. Bondurant enters with plenty of stakes experience and an affinity for the local course, having finishing second, beaten less than a length by the multiple graded stakes winner Heart to Heart, in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf last year. Bondurant has not raced since finishing fifth against a stellar allowance field over a yielding Churchill Downs turf course on Nov. 12. Arties Silver Mine, Hockey School, Nileator, and Fireman Oscar complete the lineup. Friday’s 11-race card will conclude with another optional-claiming event on turf, this one going 7 1/2 furlongs for a $56,000 purse. Ten horses signed on, with the lightly raced Kulin Rock, Attribute, Runaway Posse, and Sinatra among the contenders. Kulin Rock has shown steady improvement since launching his career last fall at Belmont Park. He won his maiden at third asking while making his local debut Dec. 15 before stepping up into allowance company and finishing fourth with a wide trip to launch his 2018 campaign. Trainer Barclay Tagg has named Jose Ortiz aboard Kulin Rock for the first time. Attribute will have to overcome the outside post but has the speed to do so and the red-hot Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard once more. Attribute set the pace but could not last in his last two starts, both at a mile, while facing similar competition. He has continued to push his Beyer Speed Figures in the right direction since joining trainer Danny Gargan’s barn last fall.
