Frosted Over notches Ontario Derby upset

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Frosted Over was overlooked in the betting at 8-1 in Sunday’s Grade 3 Ontario Derby at Woodbine, but he won for fun as the longest shot among trainer Mark Casse’s three entrants.
Frosted Over assumed a two-wide stalking position shortly after the break in the 1 1/8-mile event for 3-year-olds, while stablemate Swot Analysis set moderate fractions on a clear lead.
Frosted Over overtook Swot Analysis entering the stretch, and then drew away to prevail by 3 3/4 lengths, in a time of 1:50.50.
Queen’s Plate runner-up Riptide Rock finished second over another Ontario-bred, a wide-closing Artie’s Storm. The Casse-trained favorite Dolder Grand closed for fourth. He was followed by Swot Analysis, Hit the Point, British Royalty, and Master of the Ring.
It was the second straight Ontario Derby score for Woodbine’s leading rider Kazushi Kimura, who won it last year on Field Pass. Kimura also rode Frosted Over in each of his three previous starts this year, a seven-furlong maiden win, a fourth in the Grade 3 Marine, and a 1 1/16-mile allowance triumph.
“I’ve liked this horse since from when I broke the maiden,” Kimura said. “I thought the horse was going to be a stakes winner, and he did it today.”
Frosted Over returned $19.40. The Kentucky-bred son of Frosted earned $90,000 of the $159,300 purse for owner Gary Barber.
