Frosted Over may top Sovereign Award contenders

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The Canadian male 3-year-old division has been in disarray this year, without a leader. Frosted Over is the fastest sophomore in the country on Beyer Speed Figures, and his recent victory in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby may have put him at the top of the heap among Sovereign Award contenders.
Kentucky-bred Frosted Over earned a 92 Beyer when crushing maidens in his June 20 season opener. After checking in fourth in the Grade 3 Marine on July 11, he went to the bench for two months before notching a first-level allowance route by a neck in a blanket finish. Dismissed at 8-1 in the wagering in the 1 1/8-mile Ontario Derby, he won it convincingly with a 91 Beyer.
Trainer Mark Casse said he has no firm plans for Frosted Over, but is considering running the Frosted colt against older rivals in the closing-day feature Dec. 5, the Grade 3 Valedictory going 1 1/2 miles.
Riptide Rock should be a Sovereign finalist in the 3-year-old division, even though he hasn’t won a stakes. He was stalled in traffic on the far turn before closing furiously to finish a close second in the Queen’s Plate, after which he finished third in the Toronto Cup Stakes, second in the Breeders’ Stakes, and second in the Ontario Derby.
Uncharacteristic won both the Grade 3 Canadian Derby and Manitoba Derby, but his low Beyers in the 70s simply aren’t championship caliber.
Haddassah took the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie, but his other form was uninspiring. Breeders’ winner British Royalty was a one-hit wonder.
New York-based Queen’s Plate winner Safe Conduct made just one start north of the border. The minimum number of Canadian starts required for Sovereign Award consideration is two for 2-year-olds and three for 3-year-olds and up.
