Frizette winner Scottish Lassie works half-mile for BC Juvenile Fillies

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - When she runs in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar on Nov. 1, Scottish Lassie will to try finish one place better than her stablemate Jody’s Pride did in last year’s Juvenile Fillies.

On Sunday, Scottish Lassie couldn’t go by Jody’s Pride in a workout at Belmont Park, the first of two the Grade 1 Frizette winner will have before she ships to California next Sunday.

Scottish Lassie, under jockey Jose Lezcano, finished one length behind Jody’s Pride at the end of a half-mile workout in which Jody’s Pride went 49.40 seconds and Scottish Lassie went 49.60. Scottish Lassie did catch up on the gallop out, going five furlongs in 1:02.22 and six furlongs in 1:14.72.

Jorge Abreu, the trainer of Scottish Lassie, said he wasn’t concerned that his filly couldn’t go by last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up.

“She breezed well. I told Lezcano I didn’t want to kill her in her first breeze back,” Abreu said. “She galloped out in 1:14 and 1:28-and-change. As long as she feels the same in the gallop out, I just wanted a maintenance work. We’ll work back in six days and breeze her again.”

Scottish Lassie earned her way into the Juvenile Fillies by winning the Frizette here by nine lengths on Oct. 5. She was a maiden going into the Frizette, having finished third in her debut.

“I feel good, she came out of the [Frizette] in really good shape, I haven’t seen any changes in her, so we have to take our shot,” Abreu said.

Meanwhile, Jody’s Pride is being pointed to the Grade 3, $175,000 Pebbles Stakes, a one-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies on Nov. 8. Jody’s Pride was entered in the Glen Cove Stakes on Oct. 11, but that card was canceled due to unhealthy air quality issues. She was not entered back when that six-furlong race was rescheduled for Oct. 18.

Abreu said he changed his mind about wanting to bring Jody’s Pride back in a six-furlong race.

“Coming back three-quarters made no sense,” he said.
