Frivolous shakes off bad start, takes Governor’s Cup Futurity
Frivolous recovered rapidly from a troubled start to win Saturday’s $285,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity at Los Alamitos, her first stakes win in her sixth start.
Ridden by Henry Lopez, Frivolous stumbled away from the gate in the 350-yard race, and was fifth after 100 yards, trailing early leader Required First by a half-length. Through the final 150 yards, Frivolous accelerated rapidly to take the lead and win by a half-length.
Sent off favored, Frivolous ($3.80) was timed in 17.80 seconds, slower than her trial time of 17.68 on July 9, which led all qualifiers.
Required First (7-1) held second, finishing a half-length in front of 17-1 Attacker in the field of eight. Future Version, a well-regarded trial race winner, was withdrawn after becoming upset in the gate.
Frivolous races for Clanfield Act Stables and trainer Felix Gonzalez. She has won three times and earned $173,150, far above her purchase price of $80,000 as a yearling last October.
The Governor’s Cup was the second futurity final for Frivolous, who was a troubled sixth in the Ed Burke Million Futurity on June 19.
