This has already been a busy, and at times tumultuous, season for the 2-year-old Quarter Horse filly Frivolous, who will start favored in Saturday’s $285,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity at Los Alamitos.

Frivolous has won 2 of 5 starts, including a sharp win in a 350-yard time trial for the Governor’s Cup Futurity on July 9. Frivolous was timed in 17.68 seconds, the fastest of five divisions of the trials. She broke from the rail and won by a half-length.

Frivolous is one of two finalists with futurity experience, having finished a troubled sixth in the Ed Burke Million Futurity at 350 yards on June 19. She was beaten 1 3/4 lengths by Party Politics despite being unruly in the gate, breaking slowly, and racing in traffic with 200 yards remaining.

Trained by Felix Gonzalez for Clanfield Act Stables, Frivolous had no mishap in the Governor’s Cup trial. Frivolous, by Favorite Cartel, was purchased for $80,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale last fall.

In Saturday’s final, Frivolous breaks from post 8 in a field of nine, one berth to the inside of leading rival Interesting Eagle.

Interesting Eagle, trained by Jose Flores, won a trial in 17.81 seconds, finishing a head in front of Mornings With Maria, who was fourth in the Kindergarten Futurity at 300 yards in May.

Frivolous, Interesting Eagle, and Future Version figure to dominate the betting. Future Version, a $73,000 yearling purchase and one of three finalists trained by Flores, won a trial in 17.84 seconds for his first win in his third start, pulling clear by 1 1/2 lengths. The margin of victory was the widest of any of the trials.

The race had 10 qualifiers, but Chivalry, who had the 10th fastest qualifying time, was not entered in the final. Chivalry bled in the trials.
