Free's horses to watch at Santa Anita for week of March 2
ELEKTRUM
Trainer: John Sadler
Last race: Feb. 26, 3rd
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 85
This N2X turf filly was compromised by pace and traffic, her second bad trip since arriving in the U.S. She steadied early, was blocked in the stretch, and finished fast, but the winner had the jump. She is due for luck and is the likely favorite again at the same level.
MAJESTIC PRESENCE
Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer
Last race: Feb. 26, 7th
Finish: 2nd by head
Beyer: 82
After repeatedly falling short in routes, this N1X filly shortened to one turn and found her niche as a closing sprinter. She trailed the meet’s slowest (22.68-second) opening quarter-mile at 6 1/2 furlongs and finished fast. Different story next time with pace to run at.
HUMORISTICA
Trainer: Richard Mandella
Last race: Feb. 28, 4th
Finish: 5th by 3 1/2
Beyer: 72
A lightly raced N1X turf filly, she did not have a fair shot in this sprint. Between horses early, always in traffic, bumped in tight quarters in the lane, she nonetheless made it respectable. With an in-the-clear trip next time, she should bang out the first condition.
LUMINANCE
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Feb. 28, 7th
Finish: 1st by nose
Beyer: 81
The margin was small, and the figure modest, but this 3-year-old filly overcame a layoff and an eventful trip to win her initial route. Off slowly, shuffled slightly into the backstretch, lost ground on the far turn, battled, and won. This was a fine N1X comeback. Stakes next.
SADIE CLARE
Trainer: Phil D’ Amato
Last race: March 1, 4th
Finish: 4th by 2 3/4
Beyer: 67
A first-time starter, this 3-year-old filly ran super. She hopped at the start to be away dead last, trailed by 17 lengths, then picked up her tempo and finished well. Although her “rally” was partly due to the fast-slow race shape, this was a very promising debut.
