A first-timer by first-crop sire The Pamplemousse, this 2-year-old colt was not asked for speed, raced wide on the turn, six wide into the lane, and finished evenly. It looked like a prep race, and his second start against California-bred maidens should be considerably better.

A deep closer racing over a track generally kind to speed, this veteran gelding was unable to make an impact behind the pacesetting winner. Valley Cat, a 6-for-30 pro, fits in a high-level claiming route. With pace to run at over a fair track, he should be along in time.
