Free's horses to watch at Los Alamitos
RADIANT DANCER
Trainer: Jeff Bonde
Last race: Sept. 5, 8th
Finish: 1st by 6 1/2
Beyer: 73
Taking a suspicious drop to maiden-20K in just his second start, this colt set a hot pace and ran away late with figures that make him tough to beat next out in a maiden-claiming starter allowance.
MIGHTY MOUSSE
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Sept. 6, 2nd
Finish: 3rd by 4 1/2
Beyer: 56
A first-timer by first-crop sire The Pamplemousse, this 2-year-old colt was not asked for speed, raced wide on the turn, six wide into the lane, and finished evenly. It looked like a prep race, and his second start against California-bred maidens should be considerably better.
ALTAIRA
Trainer: Michael McCarthy
Last race: Sept. 6, 5th
Finish: 4th by 7 1/2
Beyer: 49
This 2-year-old colt was in for an educational run. He was not quick, not asked for speed, raced inside and behind horses early, then finished one-paced. Tab for an improved effort next time out.
VALLEY CAT
Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer
Last race: Sept. 7, 7th
Finish: 2nd by 1 1/2
Beyer: 78
A deep closer racing over a track generally kind to speed, this veteran gelding was unable to make an impact behind the pacesetting winner. Valley Cat, a 6-for-30 pro, fits in a high-level claiming route. With pace to run at over a fair track, he should be along in time.
