Freehold: Flos Conch Shack upsets in NJSS Standardbred Development Fund final
The $50,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Standardbred Development Fund final for 2-year-old trotting fillies was the marquee attraction on Friday afternoon at Freehold Raceway, and the result was an upset as 11-1 shot Flos Conch Shack was the winner in 2:00 2/5.
The 6-5 choice was Golden Tricks (Ake Svanstedt), who had the pole position, but she would break stride midway through the first turn while leading. When Golden Tricks went on the run, Flos Conch Shack (Jim Marohn Jr.) drove on and was able to get the lead away from Trelanney (Jim Marshall III) passing the 30 second opening quarter.
Flos Conch Shack was able to maintain control to the half in 1:01 1/5, then turned away the first-over advance from Marveloustrix (Steve Smith) from the 1:30 4/5 three-quarters into the lane. Trelanney had room up the passing lane in the stretch, but Flos Conch Shack rebuffed her as well, winning by a length. Big Weezy (Eric Abbatiello) was the third-place finisher.
A daughter of Father Patrick, Flos Conch Shack is trained by Jimmy Takter for owner John Fielding. She now has a pair of wins from five tries, and she pushed her earnings to $29,850. She returned $24.40 to win.
