Freehold: Another stakes double for Siegelman on Saturday

Greg Reinhart|Sep 24, 2022

A day after winning two stakes races at Freehold Raceway, driver Austin Siegelman accomplished the same feat on Saturday at the New Jersey half-mile oval.

In the non-wagering $35,000 Homegrown for 3-year-old pacing fillies, Siegelman and Southwind Java watched Gotthegreenlight (Jason Bartlett) and Valar Dohaeris (Dan Dube) battle for te lead through fractions of 27 3/5, 56, and 1:24 3/5, then got up in the stretch to tally by three-parts of a length over a gaining Sale El Sol (Jim Marohn Jr.). Valar Dohaeris was third, followed by Gotthegreenlight.

A daughter of Captaintreacherous bred by Southwind Farms, Southwind Java is co-owned by trainer Mark Harder in partnership with Dean Lockhart, Wayne Carleton, and Deena Frost. Southwind Java is now an eight-time winner from 28 starts, and she has earned $167,773.

Siegelman also bagged the $45,000 Renaissance for 2-year-old open pacers on the betting program with Taste Of Honey. Hound On The Beach (George Brennan) clicked off fractions of 28, 57 2/5, and 1:26 2/5 in that tilt, but Siegelman brought Taste Of Honey to the outside from the pocket before three-quarters and used a 28 3/5 last quarter to go by Hound On The Beach and pull away for a two length win in 1:55. Hound On The Beach held second over Peppermint Man (Dube).

Ron Burke trains Taste Of Honey, a Huntsville filly bred by Birnam Wood Farms, for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC. J&T Silva Stables, LLC., Phil Collura, and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. Taste Of Honey made her second appearance in the winner's circle, has now pocketed $38,285, and paid $7.40 to win as a 5-2 offering.

There was also a $40,000 Homegrown test for sophomore colt and gelding pacers on the card, and Bloodhound (Dube) followed in the pocket behind Camouflage Money (Troy Beyer) through a 27 second quarter and a 55 3/5 half, then attacked and went to the lead passing the 1:24 three-quarters. It was all Bloodhound from there, as he drew off to prevail by 4 3/4 lengths in 1:52 2/5, with JM's Finaltreasure and Siegelman getting up for second. One Of The Guys (Jack Pelling) took third.

Bloodhound is a Huntsville gelding trained by owner Mark Silva. The Walnridge Farm-bred has a record of 4-3-6 from 21 appearances, pushed his bankroll to $83,210, and returned $8.00 to win as the 3-1 third choice.
