ARCADIA, Calif. – Two small pick three wagers are the plays Sunday at Santa Anita. The initial wager (races 1-3) will single chalk and is a small $6 play. The next wager (races 6-8) singles a price horse and will cost $15.
Race 1
HEAT DU JOUR (7) is the program favorite in this $25,000 claiming starter a mile on turf. She is the “most probable winner” on the card and an unimaginative pick three single.
Race 2
Tossing out program favorite Maximinus in this $25,000 claiming sprint on principle. Who needs a pick three that begins with two favorites? Will go three deep using stretch-runner RANULF (4), up-in-class frontrunner THE CLEANERS (5), and down-in-class frontrunner MAY B (6).
Race 3
Going two deep in this N1X at 1 1/4 miles on turf, using SON OF WAR (4) and WANSTEAD GARDENS (5).

Slightly more creativity will be employed in the second wager, singling a maiden in a stakes. The challenge is staying live into the Landaluce Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.
Race 6
This $10,000 claiming route has eight entrants. Five are on the ticket.
They are COOK INLET (1), FIT TO RULE (3), program favorite WHEN WE MET (4), BLUEGRASS REWARD (7), and NICKLAUS WAY (8). Have to admit that it might be a mistake leaving out the remaining three entrants in this difficult race. All makes it a $24 play.
Race 7
SWEET (3) ran superbly last out, runner-up in a “live” race that produced three winners. She is the rightful favorite. But trainer Tom Proctor has an interesting pair. MARKETPLACE (2) figures to improve off her debut; EMYVALE COURT (9) stretches out and will try to steal it. That is three deep.
Race 8
Miss Gridley and Sambamzajammin are the two speeds and two favorites in the $125,000 Landaluce Stakes. Either filly can win. But at the discrepancy in price, this ticket will single second-start maiden RIGHT THERE (6). She is 6-1.
Right There ran well in her debut, trained superbly since, and should appreciate the longer distance. She stretches from 4 1/2 furlongs to 5 1/2.
Do maidens win stakes for 2-year-olds? They do it every season.
