AMBOSELLI Trainer: Jim Cassidy Last race: Oct. 6, 7th Finish: 2nd by 1 Beyer: 89 A tough trip cost this N2X filly the win in a turf route. Amboselli raced three wide next to last, took up at the three-eighths pole when a rival shied, re-rallied inside, narrowed the gap late, and was likely best. JUST KIDDING Trainer: Pete Eurton Last race: Oct. 7, 7th Finish: 5th by 8 Beyer: 88 Curious strategy compromised this gelding in an N2X route. He made an early move inside the leader at the half-mile pole, briefly challenged inside, got shuffled back, lost interest, and faded. He runs best from slightly off the pace. ALL RUN Trainer: Richard Baltas Last race: Oct. 8, 4th Finish: 2nd by 2 1/4 Beyer: 94 This longshot sprinter set fast fractions in a Grade 1 and fought back in the lane. He was no match for odds-on winner Lord Nelson, but finished nearly four clear of third. Much improved for new trainer, he fits vs. slightly easier. SIBERIAN IRIS Trainer: Richard Mandella Last race: Oct. 8, 10th Finish: 4th by 3 Beyer: 59 First-time starter from a stable that runs its maidens into shape rather than trying to win first out, this 2-year-old filly rallied from next to last in a turf sprint that was a mere prep. This was a promising debut. QUEEN BEE TO YOU Trainer: Steve Miyadi Last race: Oct. 9, 5th Finish: 2nd by 1/2 Beyer: 44 This 2-year-old maiden-claiming filly “should have been appearing in the winner’s circle,” according to track announcer Michael Wrona. The call was accurate. Queen Bee to You steadied, was blocked, re-rallied, and finished clear of third. She fits in a similar Cal-bred maiden race. LONGSTOCKING Trainer: Michael McCarthy Last race: Oct. 7, 5th Finish: 3rd by 3/4 Beyer: 81 Another troubled trip by this turf sprinter. She tried to slice between rivals in the lane, but the hole closed and she took up. She still tried to finish, and is way overdue for a first-level allowance win.
