Free: Santa Anita horses to watch for week of May 30, 2022

Brad Free|Jun 01, 2022

ALBAYAADER

Trainer: Jeff Mullins

Last race: May 27, race 1

Finish: 5th by 3

Beyer: 59

European import broke slowly in U.S. debut in maiden turf sprint, blocked length of lane, never had a chance to run. Call it inconclusive, would have been closer with clean trip.

HOTROD RIDE

Trainer: Sean McCarthy

Last race: May 27, race 8

Finish: 3rd by 2 1/4

Beyer: 63

Cal-bred maiden-claiming gelding broke from outside post in dirt route, four and five wide start to finish, inherited second when runner-up disqualified. Better than it looks.

FUN TO DREAM

Trainer: Sean McCarthy

Last race: May 28, race 2

Finish: 1st by 6 1/4

Beyer: 78

Cal-bred debut filly by Arrogate, sib to stakes winner Heck Yeah, trained super and ran accordingly. Pressed wide, kicked, sharp. Candidate for Fleet Treat July 28 at Del Mar.

PRINCIPE CARLO

Trainer: Librado Boracio

Last race: May 29, race 4

Finish: 2nd by nose

Beyer: 97

Super effort in seven-furlong Grade 2. Pressed blazing 44.09 half, put away favorite Brickyard Ride, worn down. Career-best effort by Cal-bred sprinter who loves Del Mar.

HAMWOOD FLIER

Trainer: George Papaprodromou

Last race: May 29, race 9

Finish: 1st by 3 1/4

Beyer: 86

Despite wicked fractions (44.92 and 1:08.81) in entry-level allowance mile, Euro import opened up nine lengths and never looked back. The one to catch wherever she runs next.

HAIL FREEDOM

Trainer: Doug O’Neill

Last race: May 30, race 2

Finish: 1st by 7

Beyer: 96

First time long on dirt, Cal-bred allowance colt set fast pace (45.80 and 1:10.07) in mile race and was gone. Not much behind him, but powerful win suggests open N1X in reach.

HEYWOODS BEACH

Trainer: John Sadler

Last race: May 30, race 5

Finish: 4th by 6 3/4

Beyer: 95

Off since last summer, comebacker chased fast pace in Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile, stayed in contention until late, tired. Promising comeback, veteran handles both turf and dirt.

SHOW TIME

Trainer: Richard Mandella

Last race: May 30, race 8

Finish: 2nd by 3/4

Beyer: 79

Debut colt by Into Mischief trained only okay, but ran very well. Settled, rallied wide and narrowed the gap late in a promising launch to his career. Maiden should be followed.
