Free: Santa Anita horses to watch for week of March 7, 2022

Brad Free|Mar 09, 2022

SEE THROUGH IT

Trainer: Brian Koriner

Last race: March 5, race 1

Finish: 5th by 3 3/4

Beyer: 84

Front-running turf sprinter dueled early in salty N1X on hill, hung tough to inside eighth pole, faltered. Decent effort vs. tough rivals, follow on class drop/easier pace scenario.

MAURITIUS

Trainer: Bob Baffert

Last race: March 5, race 2

Finish: 2nd by 7 1/2

Beyer: 86

Debut colt by Twirling Candy pressed pace, held second in race won by star stablemate Taiba. Mauritius ran fast enough to win most maiden sprints, should be tough next out.

CLOSING REMARKS

Trainer: Carla Gaines

Last race: March 5, race 5

Finish: 3rd by 1 1/4

Beyer: 87

Cal-bred filly in tough in Grade 2 mile. Lagged, smoked sub-23 final quarter, ran well. Possible long-term target – $100,000 Fran’s Valentine for state-bred turf females May 28.

CABO SPIRIT

Trainer: George Papaprodomou

Last race: March 5, race 6

Finish: 5th by 20 1/4

Beyer: 66

Stakes-winning 3-year-old on turf took one final shot on dirt, and misfired. Runs best on grass, can go green for summer campaign. Good colt when he runs on preferred footing.

BEYOND BRILLIANT

Trainer: John Shirreffs

Last race: March 5, race 10

Finish: 4th by 1

Beyer: 100

Fast-pace front-runner ran super in G1 Kilroe Mile. Fast fractions, fought back, collared late, race won by deep closer. Super try by Beyond Brilliant first vs. older stakes winners.

LAW PROFESSOR

Trainer: Michael McCarthy

Last race: March 5, race 10

Finish: 5th by 4 3/4

Beyer: 93

Turf mile too short and pace too fast in G1. Positioned closer to pace than preferred, loomed at quarter pole, then faded. Probably wants longer distance, may prefer dirt.

AIN’T EASY

Trainer: Phil D’Amato

Last race: March 6, race 8

Finish: 3rd by 4 1/4

Beyer: 81

Off five months, Grade 2 winner last year returned in Grade 3. Forwardly placed inside, not fit enough late, evenly. Should improve next out in graded race for 3-year-old fillies.

LETSGETLUCKY

Trainer: Brian Koriner

Last race: March 7, race 1

Finish: First by neck

Beyer: 87

Cal-bred gelding overcame slow takeoff and wide trip to win Cal-bred allowance sprint in better-than-looked style. He prefers dirt, and can handle the class hike to open N1X.
