Brad Free|Jan 02, 2019

KA’NAH
Trainer: Ryan Hanson
Last race: Dec. 26, 5th
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 79
This second-start maiden 2-year-old was best. Pressed pace inside on a day most winners rallied wide, shuffled back and lost position at quarter pole, re-rallied inside. Good effort. He handles turf and dirt.

BEACH VIEW
Trainer: Leonard Powell
Last race: Dec. 26, 8th
Finish: 4th by 4 3/4
Beyer: 93
Mile and a sixteenth too short for this distance specialist, who finished well and can only improve at a longer trip. Could show up in mile and quarter Grade 2 San Marcos on turf Feb 2.

CALEXMAN
Trainer: Vladimir Cerin
Last race: Dec. 26, 9th
Finish: 6th by 5 1/4
Beyer: 94
Longshot in Malibu Stakes, this speedster ran super. Set the pace inside on a day most winners rallied wide, led to deep stretch, and was swallowed. It was a career-best effort. He is a stakes threat on turf or dirt.

KANTHAKA
Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer
Last race: Dec. 26, 9th
Finish: 8th by 6
Beyer: 92
Steadied and shuffled to last at eh five-sixteenths pole in the Malibu Stakes, he re-rallied inside, but had too much to overcome. He was second best to McKinzie. Follow in upcoming sprint stakes.

ANUKET
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Dec. 30, 6th
Finish: 1st by 4 1/4
Beyer: 81
This well-regarded filly scored a decisive debut victory. Forwardly placed while wide, she kicked away strongly late. She figures as a major player this winter in the 3-year-old filly division.

NORTH COUNTY GUY
Trainer: Richard Baltas
Last race: Dec. 31, 5th
Finish: 5th by 1 3/4
Beyer: 80
He may have been confused by strategy in this N1X turf sprint. Popped the gate but curiously was rated, chased the leaders, and lacked a rally. He runs best when allowed to use his speed. He could try two turns.
