Free: How I'll play Santa Anita on Saturday, Oct. 28
ARCADIA, Calif. – Two nuggets offer potential wagering value Saturday at Santa Anita. And there is more. A handicapping omission requires clarification, and a longshot bomber demands consideration in Saturday’s biggest race. So, here goes – races 1, 3, 8 and 9.
Race 1
At some point, you have to give up on a filly like GOSEECAL. But not yet. Although she needed 11 starts to win a maiden race and finished off the board in all three starts at the first allowance condition, Goseecal deserves one final chance Saturday.
Goseecal has had excuses for finishing off the board in her last three starts. Two were won by the pacesetter, which negated her late rally. Last out, Goseecal was blocked for most of the final furlong – a simply brutal trip.
Goseecal switches riders Saturday to Gary Stevens, who entered Friday as the meet’s leading percentage rider on turf (26 percent). Goseecal is listed at 5-1 in the first-level allowance. At 4-1 or higher, she is worth a straight win bet.
Race 3
At some point, you have to give up on a filly like LORI’S ATTITUDE. This might be the right time, even though she has the top speed figures, is proven on the hillside course, and finished a sharp second in her recent comeback. Most likely winner? Of course.
Lori’s Attitude, however, is a seven-start maiden who lost four times as the favorite. She will be favored again in this special-weight turf sprint. Is there an alternative? Yes.
CHO HAS ZIP is not the most likely winner, but at 8-1, she is the most attractive gamble. She has been routing and fading. That style often translates to victory on the hill. The blazing pace she set two starts back, racing one mile at Del Mar, earned a sky-high Tom Brohamer pace figure.
Cho Has Zip will be running on the hill for the first time Saturday. She has enough gas to keep the favorite in her sights. And if the favorite falters again, Cho Has Zip should be in the right spot to attack. At 8-1 or higher, she is worth a straight win bet.
Race 8
This handicapper omitted SHIVERMETIMBERS (6) from top-three consideration in the Daily Racing Form analysis. The blunder was a complete fail. No excuses.
Do not make the same mistake. Shivermetimbers is a legitimate contender in this special-weight sprint for 2-year-olds. He finished third in his debut, a highly rated race in which he earned an 83 Beyer. He is the 3-1 favorite, as he should be.
However, Shivermetimbers faces a well-regarded first-timer who looks live. HE’S STYLISH is an Into Mischief colt who is a sibling to romping debut winner Sensitively. If he runs anything like his sister, He’s Stylish will give Shivermetimbers a run for his money.
Race 9
The Grade 2 Twilight Derby is deep, and the favorites are genuine – SHARP SAMURAI and JUST HOWARD. But a longshot lurks. He is a crazy flyer, for the sake of action. Just something to dabble with in this nine-furlong turf race for 3-year-olds.
CISTRON is 20-1 on the morning line, which is about right. He finished third last out against older in a stakes won by Breeders’ Cup Mile-bound Blackjackcat. Cistron has the inside post and a forwardly placed running style that will keep him saving ground and out of trouble.
Can he stay nine furlongs? Probably not. Will he win? Probably not. But at 20-1, Cistron is worth a flyer.
The nuggets are Goseecal in race 1 and Cho Has Zip in race 3. The oversight is Shivermetimbers in race 8. The flyer is Cistron in race 9.
