Free: How I'll play Santa Anita for Monday, July 4
The pick six on Monday at Santa Anita is not really a pick six. Not with race 4 standout Drefong in the opening leg, and race 9 standout Worldwide in the closing leg.
Drefong and Worldwide, program odds 4-5 and 8-5, respectively, both figure to win. That makes it a virtual pick four. It is the type sequence a $60 play such as the one outlined below has a chance to hit.
Race 4, second-level allowance sprint: Drefong (3) set a fast pace and wired first-level allowance rivals last out with a big number – 97 Beyer. Drefong should win right back.
Single: Drefong (3)
Race 5, maiden special weight sprint: Leveler (3) is favored off successive runner-up finishes. No knocks. But she must catch Lunar Empress (8), a comebacker with speed from a stable that does super with layoff maidens. Little Dume (1) finished a creditable fourth in her debut and is 20-1 in the program, while Summertimemischief (2) has worked well for her debut. C. C. Zipp (4) might deserve one final chance in the seventh start of her career. She is quick.
Five-deep: Little Dume (1), Summertimemischief (2), Leveler (3), C. C. Zipp (4), and Lunar Empress (8)
Race 6, maiden special weight 2-year-old filly sprint: Adorable (3) outworked Back Off on June 22; Back Off won her debut on Friday, albeit in slow time. But the result flattered the “workout form” of Adorable, whose trainer, Bob Baffert, wins with these. In order to keep this ticket affordable, program favorite Adorable is the second of three singles.
Single: Adorable (3)
Race 7, first-level optional $40,000 claiming sprint:
N1X/optional $40k claiming F&M sprint: Revenue Virginius (4) takes a class drop that makes sense; Be a Lady (6) finished second at this level in her comeback. For a bomber, Lemon de Oro (5) makes her third start back from a layoff after an improved effort last out. She is 15-1.
Three deep: Revenue Virginius (4), Lemon de Oro (5) and Be a Lady (6)
Race 8, Thor’s Echo Handicap, Cal-bred sprint: The favorites are dubious; this pick six ticket will include front-runner Nardo (4) and closer Magic Mark (5). They are 6-1 and 7-2, respectively.
Two deep: Nardo (4) and Magic Mark (5)
Race 9, Cal-bred $50,000 maiden claiming sprint: Worldwide (9) is a standout, based on back-to-back runner-up finishes at the level. He is 8-5 in the program and headed down.
Single: Worldwide (9)
The ticket ($2 pick six), ticket cost $60
