Free: How I'd Play Del Mar for Saturday, July 23
California Chrome and Dortmund, top-class comebackers both training super, are likely to dominate the Grade 2 San Diego on Saturday at Del Mar.
This is not a revelation. And with San Diego entrants Soi Phet and Hard Aces both likely to scratch to run Sunday instead, the San Diego will offer minimal wagering appeal. That’s fine. There are other options Saturday, specifically a double on races 4-5, and a race-7 exacta.
Race 4
The 2-year-old filly Adorable was only prepping in her debut 19 days ago. She finished second, has worked twice since for trainer Bob Baffert, and figures to improve significantly in her second start. She is the 8-5 program favorite.
Light of the Moon raced wide in the same race, finished fifth, and also ran like she was prepping. However, it is unclear if Light of the Moon is as talented as her Jerry Hollendorfer-trained stablemate Unique Bella, who was forced to skip the Saturday maiden race with an unspecified setback.
The daily double will key Adorable, with five runners in the next race.
Race 5
Calculator is a toss in this second-level allowance at a mile on turf. A top sprinter-miler on the main track, he is switching to turf halfway through his 4-year-old campaign. No thanks, as the 3-1 program favorite.
The race includes five others with established turf credentials and higher odds. Metaboss makes his first start for trainer Phil D’Amato; Itsinthepost finished second last out at this level; China Girl Lover habitually outruns his odds; Perfectly Majestic is proven at the level; and Skelton Pass may have found a home on turf.
The daily double will use all five.
Races 4-5 double ($2 double = $10 total)
Race 4: Adorable (2)
Race 5: Metaboss (1), Itsinthepost (4), China Girl Lover (5), Perfectly Majestic (8) and Skelton Pass (11).
Race 7
The Grade 2 San Clemente for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf includes two logical contenders that recently traded decisions – top choice Be Mine, and program favorite Stays in Vegas. Good fillies listed at 3-1 and 5-2, respectively.
The field also includes an upset candidate who ran the best race of her career last out in her first start on grass. Jade Princess faced older in a second-level allowance, and ran very well. She pressed the pace, made the lead in midstretch, and then got run over by a deep closer that rallied from the back half of the field. Jade Princess held second.
Jade Princess may have found a home on grass. With only slight improvement while returning to a stakes restricted to 3-year-old fillies, she could outrun her 10-1 morning line. Jade Princess is the key in an exacta box with the favorites.
Race 7 bet
$2 exacta box Be Mine (3) and Jade Princess (5) = $4
$2 exacta box Stays in Vegas (10) and Jade Princess (5) = $4
Saturday could a big day for Baffert. If his second-time starter Adorable wins race 4, and Jade Princess outruns her odds in race 7, Saturday could also be a winning day for bettors.
