Free: Horses to watch for week of Oct. 11, 2021

Brad Free|Oct 13, 2021

GO ON

Trainer: Doug O’Neill

Last race: Oct. 9, race 3

Finish: First by neck

Beyer: 75

Lightly raced 3-year-old vastly improved this year since moving to turf. Broke last in maiden sprint, blocked into lane, dove inside, surged, up late. Sharp win. Up the ladder.

SLOW DOWN ANDY

Trainer: Doug O’Neill

Last race: Oct. 9, race 4

Finish: 1st by 4 3/4

Beyer: 77

Another runner by Nyquist, debut 2-year-old crushed Cal-bred maiden sprint. Pressed pace, ran away, may fit in $175,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes on Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

STRAIGHT UP G

Trainer: Richard Baltas

Last race: Oct. 9, race 4

Finish: 4th by 6 1/4

Beyer: 61

San Luis Rey-based debut 2-year-old favored despite no works on slow Santa Anita surface. Colt raced wide midpack, finished evenly while only prepping. Can improve next out.

LUCKY GIRL

Trainer: Richard Baltas

Last race: Oct. 9, race 5

Finish: 7th by 5 1/2

Beyer: 48

Maiden filly from Europe had no shot in slow-paced turf mile. Rank, hard-held midpack, in trouble, split field in race dominated by speed. Juvenile miss is better than this indicates.

PHENOM

Trainer: Phil D’Amato

Last race: Oct. 10, race 1

Finish: 3rd by 1 1/4

Beyer: 68

Debut 2-year-old filly in turf sprint saved ground just off pace, appeared green early, lowered her head in stretch, finished with a rush, galloped out super.

ALIGATO

Trainer: Mark Glatt

Last race: Oct. 10, race 3

Finish: 1st by 1 1/4

Beyer: 77

Maiden 4-year-old won second start despite tons of trouble. Blocked and steadied turn, blocked quarter pole, surged, won going away. Could have won by many. Up the ladder.

OUTTA HAND

Trainer: Phil D’Amato

Last race: Oct. 11, race 1

Finish: 4th by 3

Beyer: 62

Cal-bred maiden 2-year-old skipped recent race on dirt, forced to run on turf for debut prep. Raced three wide and finished evenly. Stanford gelding can improve on main track.

ROSENQUIST

Trainer: Kristin Mulhall

Last race: Oct. 11, race 9

Finish: 5th by 7 1/2

Beyer: 61

First start in four months, $50,000 maiden-claiming gelding had no shot while wide start to finish after breaking from post 10 in turf mile. Once well regarded, he is likely to improve.
